Nonlinear dynamic rupture inversion of the 2000 Western Tottori, Japan, earthquake

چکیده
[1] We have developed a systematic nonlinear inversion method for estimating rupture propagation and the underlying dynamic parameters for large historical earthquakes. The rupture modeling is carried out using a three-dimensional finite-difference method, and the inversion is implemented by a neighbourhood algorithm, minimizing the misfit between computed and observed near-fault seismograms. We test the method by estimating the stress drop within 32 regions on the causative fault for the 2000 magnitude 6.6 Western Tottori, Japan, earthquake. While the dynamic models show both similarities and differences with the conventional kinematic models, our method provides an ensemble of physically-correct models with plausible rupture propagation for the earthquake.

Source rupture process of the 2016 central Tottori, Japan, earthquake (MJMA 6.6) inferred from strong motion waveforms
The source rupture process of the 2016 central Tottori, Japan, earthquake (MJMA 6.6) was estimated from strong motion waveforms using a multiple-time-window kinematic waveform inversion. A large slip region with a maximum slip of 0.6 m extends from the hypocenter to the shallower part, caused by the first rupture propagating upward 0–3 s after rupture initiation. The contribution of this large ...

The dense networks of strong-ground-motion instruments in Japan (KNET and KiK-net) provide a means of direct visualization of regional wave propagation during large earthquakes. For the 2000 Tottori-ken Seibu earthquake (Mw 6.6) in western Japan, snapshots of ground motion, derived directly from interpolation of a large number of array observations, demonstrate clearly the nature of the source ...

The Influence of 3-D Structure on the Propagation of Seismic Waves Away from Earthquakes
The seismic records from significant earthquakes are profoundly affected by 3-D variations in crustal structure both in the source zone itself and in propagation to some distance. Even in structurally complex zones such as Japan and Mexico relatively coherent arrivals are found associated with different classes of propagation paths. The presence of strong lateral variations can disrupt the arri...
متن کاملStress-Breakdown Time and Slip-Weakening Distance Inferred from Slip-Velocity Functions on Earthquake Faults
We estimate the critical slip-weakening distance on earthquake faults by using a new approach, which is independent of the estimate of fracture energy or radiated seismic energy. The approach is to find a physically based relation between the breakdown time of shear stress Tb, the time of peak slip-velocity Tpv, and the slip-weakening distance Dc, from the time histories of shear stress, slip, ...
